Authorities reported they were notified by a man who found a car in Hanau smeared with reddish liquid

Around fifty vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.

Vehicles, walls and postal boxes were marked, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they stated in a release.

Officers state they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday, when a man discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued liquid.

The substance had been applied in the form of a banned symbol, they reported.

Police then found numerous other marked cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.

Swastikas are banned in Germany under laws outlawing the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.

Officials state initial examinations show the substance was likely human bodily fluid.

"At present there remains no lead as to its origin; officials are not yet aware of any harm in relation with the occurrence," they stated.

Municipal representatives stated they were trying "to unravel the case" and have requested to the public for tips.

A senior political figure stated the attack left him stunned and needed to be solved quickly.

"This incident hits the core of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack five years ago," he wrote on online, referring to the death of nine victims by a gunman targeting people of migrant background in February 2020.
