The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
