Elite Athletes Call on Iranian Authorities to Stop Execution of Boxing Star
More than two dozen Olympic champions, trainers and other world-class competitors have put their names to a letter demanding a stop to the capital punishment of a boxing titleholder and trainer, who is sentenced to die in the country.
Escalating Worldwide Condemnation
Amidst increasing worldwide anger over the country's escalating use of the death penalty as a instrument of suppression, the strongly worded letter censures the Iranian regime's ruling to confirm the capital punishment of Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani.
Vafaei Sani, three decades old, from the city in north-east Iran, was taken into custody for taking part in national uprisings in 2019 and charged of aiding an dissident organization. He has endured five years in prison, where he has been abused and held in seclusion.
“Sport is designed to promote hope, unity, and bravery,” the endorsers wrote. “The execution of a titleholder for his beliefs is a blatant attack on these principles and a warning to any competitor who dares to express dissent.
Record of Putting to Death Competitors
The letter said that Vafaei Sani’s circumstances was part of a pattern and underscored the nation's record of putting to death competitors for their convictions, including Habib Khabiri, leader of the soccer squad, and a volleyball captain, leader of the women's volleyball squad.
