"When are you chatting with Haim?" an inquiry reads. "I wanted to ask if I can be their extra sister."

There is only a key snag: I also wants to be the Haims' fourth member. What's more, we are in plentiful company. Several celebrated fans have openly coveted the honor.

The evidence suggests something is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their career performing shows at small eateries with their family. Today, they are repeated Grammy hopefuls.

Like all the greatest bands, they're a inseparable trio. Their videos often depict them striding in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they perform with such pure exuberance you can't help but think, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I bought a drum kit'," states Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "It is the ultimate honour. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate people to make music."

"Therefore anyone is invited to be the next member of Haim."

Grammy Recognition

The band are connecting from a break, where they're recovering after an major tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been shortlisted for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-female band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The weight of the nomination resonates with the sisters.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major milestone," says Alana. "But we're just grateful for the women that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The record was born from a phase of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that unique transitional period where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.

The words detail endings and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them working out in real time who they want to be.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to consciously practice ignoring the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Sound

That recent confidence called for a different sonic direction – more raw and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the drum sound.

"Drums are such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Laughter

The trio's honesty fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their dating misadventures.

A former partner broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's only darkness," notes Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Path

It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an international audience.

However the sister act will consistently be their number one commitment.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was a young child," shares Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still making music."
