Administration Reveals Government Employee Layoffs as Shutdown Approaches Three-Week Mark

The White House confirmed the initiation of government employee terminations on Friday, making good on prior threats in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

Russell Vought wrote on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the government’s process for letting employees go.

Although the official did not specify which departments were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that notices had been distributed within that agency. Furthermore, a DHS representative indicated that layoffs would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a labor organization for federal workers announced that employees at the Department of Education would be affected by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Union leaders cautions that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on public services relied upon by millions of Americans and pledged to contest the moves in the legal system.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has used the government shutdown as an pretext to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who deliver critical services to communities nationwide,” said Everett Kelley, who leads the AFGE.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the announcement, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to support a GOP-supported legislation to restore funding unless it contains provisions related to health policy. After repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, indicating the deadlock is not expected to be resolved before then.

At a press conference, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, criticized opposition lawmakers for not supporting the Republican proposal, which passed in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.

Federal workers’ final pay that government employees will see until opposition leaders decide to do their job and reopen the government,” the speaker stated. “Starting next week, military personnel, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a full paycheck.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Last week, labor groups sought a temporary restraining order to prevent the government from implementing any layoffs during the shutdown. Moreover, a court official ordered the government to disclose details on termination strategies, impacted departments, and whether any federal employees had been brought back to carry out staff reductions.

A report contended that a government shutdown limits the authority of the government to carry out firings, citing official advice that acknowledged any long-term staff cuts need to have been started prior to the shutdown began.

Consequences for Employees

The layoffs occurred on the very day that federal workers received only a incomplete payment covering the final days of September but not the start of October, since appropriations expired at the beginning of the period.

A public service advocate, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, criticized the political stalemate’s effect on government workers.

“It is wrong to make federal employees suffer because our elected officials in the legislature and the White House have not succeeded to keep our government open and operational,” the advocate said. “Our air traffic controllers, VA nurses, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not responsible for this funding crisis.”

The irony is that lawmakers and top administration officials are continuing to be paid amid the funding gap.
